Meniere Disease
What is Meniere Disease?
Meniere disease is caused by abnormal fluid buildup (called hydrops) in the inner ear. Pressure buildup inside these chambers can lead to episodic episodes of intense spinning (vertigo), hearing fluctuations, tinnitus, and ear fullness.
Symptoms
Vertigo
Nausea
Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
Ear fullness or pressure
Hearing loss, usually in one ear
Fluctuating symptoms
Treatment
Treatment centers around symptom control and decreasing flare-ups. Options may include:
Reducing salt in the diet
Medications
Injections
Surgery for severe, end-stage cases
With proper care, many patients are able to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks, and live with excellent quality of life.
