Eardrum Perforation

What is an Eardrum Perforation?

The eardrum (tympanic membrane) is a thin layer of skin that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. It is responsible for vibrating sound waves, and a hole in the eardrum leads to hearing loss. Perforations may be caused by infections, qtip use, tauma, pressure changes, or prior ear surgery. Some holes heal on their own, while others may persist.

Symptoms

  • Hearing loss

  • Ear pain

  • Frequent infections

  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

  • Sensitivity to water or cold air entering the ear

Treatment

Treatment options may include:

  • Observation

  • Medications if infection is present

  • Hearing aid to amplify sounds

  • Surgery (tympanoplasty) to repair the perforation

Repairing the eardrum can improve hearing, reduce infections, and allow you to get the ear wet safely again.
